Azurlis® founder Dr Fernanda da Silva Tatley is a Dunedin based molecular medical microbiologist. Raised in Portugal she studied at the University of Cape Town completing a PhD in molecular medical microbiology.
She then moved to New Zealand in 1999 as a scientist for the University of Otago. At the same time Fernanda began developing her own holistic skin care range. She has a Masters of Entrepreneurship. She is also a Reiki Master and Reconnective Healing Practitioner.
Fernanda’s approach to skincare reflects a balance between science and soul. Her holistic approach to skin, body and soul care is an extension of how she sees the world around her.
Our natural, holistic, ethical skin care philosophy
Azurlis®'s philosophy reflects a holistic approach to skin, body and soul care, in a precious world. Fernanda’s goal was to create natural skin care that was free of hazardous ingredients, with botanical ingredients and packaging adhering to organic certification, as well as environmentally sustainable practices, and that products were not to be tested on animals.
Our principal goal was to develop a holistic, natural and ethical approach to skin and soul care that reflected sustainability because we value the world around us. We care for our wellbeing and are mindful of what we use on our skin, as this is the largest organ of our body, but we are equally protective of our environment. Hence, one of our mottos is that Azurlis® is inspired by nature and created with soul.
Thus, in encouraging environmentally friendly awareness and practices, we are contributing to the sustainability of our unique planet and our own wellbeing. We believe that this is best achieved through adherence to organic certification of food, farming and personal products. This approach is our motivation to obtain full organic certification for all our products, although many of our ingredients are already aligned with organic certification standards for personal care products.
To comply with our principal goal, all the ingredients in our products were selected for their beneficial properties and energy, as well as for their generally acceptable problem-free safety and toxicity profiles.
No synthetic or petrochemical derived ingredients are used in any of our products.
This means absolutely NO: parabens, phenoxyethanol, formaldehyde, silicones, mineral oils, PEG, PPG, phthalates, synthetic colours and fragrances. No animal products or bi-products.
Only BioGro (NZ Organic Certifying Organization) Approved preservatives and emulsifiers are used in our formulations.
It was always intended to attain organic certification for our ranges despite the cost. This process is nearly completed through BioGro NZ.
In the meantime we obtained Approval by the NZ Vegetarian Society for our Anti-Aging Range. Though Vegetarian Society Approval is also intended for the remainder of the products, we have opted to take one step at a time.
In addition to these certifications, our brand has a special point of difference: the products are enhanced by lapis lazuli gem essence and Reki energy.
These are not so much benefits for the skin but rather for the person using the products, as Reiki is a form of energy healing, being calming and relaxing.
In essence our objective was to encourage users to take a few minutes each day, while applying the products, to recognize how special they are and how good they feel. Why?
Because when the soul feels great… the body tags along!
But above all, we wanted to develop a unique global holistic, natural, ethical NZ brand hence starting with an online retailing method.
Having taken Azurlis® to where it is today, Fernanda has decided to take a "back-seat" role, as she has given her heart and soul to this project for the last 5 years, not counting all the prior incubating decades. This has been a carefully considered decision that has allowed her look back and appreciate what has achieved.
While Azurlis® has been her dream and sole focus for a long time, more recently she has also became involved with the University of Otago as an Enterprise Manager. This is not about moving on, but rather enjoying all the opportunities of the moment.
